Metal nitric oxides redox flow batteriesThe Need Redox flow batteries (RFBs) offer a promising solution for storing intermittent renewable energy in the electrical grid. However, their reliance on finite and unsustainable transition metals, such as vanadium, poses significant sustainability challenges. The rising costs and environmental impacts of mining these metals threaten the widespread adoption of RFB technology. There's a pressing need for more sustainable energy storage solutions that utilize abundant and environmentally friendly resources. The Technology Our new battery technology is based on abundant nitrogen oxides (NOx), providing a sustainable alternative to conventional RFBs. By utilizing nitrogen sources like ammonia and diammonium phosphate, we break away from the reliance on finite metal resources, such as vanadium. Our metal nitric oxides battery offers a maximum specific energy twenty times higher than state-of-the-art vanadium RFBs and comparable to Li-ion batteries, providing a high-energy-density solution for renewable energy storage.
