Automated Dynamic Display System for Trading Card Collections

The Need

Collectors of trading cards face a tradeoff between storage capacity and display functionality. Conventional solutions, such as binders, boxes, and static display cases, either allow efficient storage or visual presentation, but not both simultaneously. Showcasing a large collection requires manual handling, significant space, or repetitive rearrangement. There is a clear unmet need for a solution that enables collectors and retailers to dynamically display curated subsets of their collections while securely storing the full inventory in a compact, organized format.

The Technology

OSU engineers have developed an automated storage and display platform that enables dynamic presentation of trading cards from a larger collection. The system integrates a high-density storage module, a motorized retrieval mechanism, and a multi-position display interface. Under programmable control, individual cards are selectively retrieved from storage and placed into visible display positions, with the ability to continuously cycle through different subsets. The system effectively functions as a “living” display, enabling hands-free curation and rotation of collections without requiring manual handling or reorganization.
