Lane Line–Mounted Real-Time Visual Swim Pacing System

The Need

Swim training today largely relies on retrospective pacing feedback via stopwatches or pace clocks, which limits a swimmer’s ability to adjust performance in real time. Existing solutions that provide continuous pacing feedback are often expensive, time-consuming to install, and incompatible with all stroke types or pool configurations. There remains a clear need for a cost-effective, easy-to-deploy system that delivers continuous, real-time pace guidance across a range of swimming environments and athlete skill levels.

The Technology

OSU engineers have developed a lane line–mounted device that travels along a pool lane while providing a moving visual pacing reference for swimmers. The system attaches directly to standard lane lines and traverses the length of the pool at a programmed speed, projecting a visible cue that swimmers can follow to maintain a desired pace. The device operates autonomously during training sessions, enabling continuous feedback without requiring permanent installation or complex setup, and is adaptable to various swimming strokes and pool configurations.
