All Wheel Drive Electrically-Variable Transmission

The Need

Hybrid engines are at the forefront of clean transportation technology. Thus far hybrid power-trains have been implemented primarily to improve the fuel efficiency of already economical passenger cars, leaving a void between clean energy and high performance vehicles. The integration of hybrid technology with high performance vehicles could potentially open up an array of platform options for designers; removing traditional constraints and even facilitating the next generation high performance sports car. An innovative transmission concept could enhance a 600 horsepower spark-ignited V8 with 1200 horsepower from electric machines, while maintaining compliance with emission standards. However, two-wheel drive systems have proven to be inadequate in delivering this immense torque to the wheels. Thus, there is need for an intelligent drive system capable of supporting such a transmission.

The Technology

Researchers at The Ohio State University, led by Dr. Codrin-Gruie Cantemir, developed an electrically-variable transmission for all wheel drive vehicles. This innovative transmission is capable of extreme power levels with complete real-time control of torque to front and rear axles and net speed ratio. The transmission functions autonomously without the need of any power source other than the main engine, and can additionally supplement the engine power with a battery pack or similar device. This is achieved in a lightweight, economic package with impressive mass distribution; facilitating transmission adaptability to power a variety of vehicles. This innovative transmission serves to bring the economical and environmental benefits of hybrid technology to performance vehicles.Currently Dr. Cantemir has an issued patent 7,921,949 available for licensing on this technology.
