Adaptive Multi-User Biofeedback Ambience Control Platform

The Need

There is a growing demand for non-invasive, scalable solutions to improve mental well-being, reduce stress, and enhance productivity across diverse environments such as homes, workplaces, healthcare settings, and education. Existing approaches operate largely in isolation and fail to dynamically respond to changing physiological and emotional states, particularly in group settings. A solution capable of continuously monitoring individuals and intelligently adapting surrounding conditions in real time could significantly improve comfort, health outcomes, and performance.

The Technology

An OSU engineering professor has developed a closed-loop system that integrates physiological sensing with adaptive environmental modulation. Signals derived from one or more individuals are processed by a control architecture that determines an appropriate ambient response aligned with predefined or learned well-being objectives. The system then adjusts environmental outputs accordingly, continually refining its response through real-time feedback. The platform is designed to operate across individual or group contexts and can be implemented using distributed or centralized control strategies.

Commercial Applications

  • Smart home and consumer wellness ecosystems
  • Workplace productivity and employee experience optimization
  • Clinical and therapeutic environments (e.g., behavioral health, recovery rooms)
  • Education, training, and performance-focused environments (e.g., classrooms, simulators)

Benefits/Advantages

  • Closed-loop personalization: Continuously adapts environmental conditions based on real-time physiological feedback rather than static presets
  • Multi-user capability: Supports optimization for groups, enabling shared environments to respond to collective needs
  • Modality flexibility: Compatible with a wide range of sensing inputs and environmental outputs
  • Scalable architecture: Applicable across consumer, enterprise, and clinical settings with modular
