Motion Signature-Based Secure Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Identification Platform

The Need

Many vehicle-based transactions and automated services rely on proximity technologies such as RFID, NFC, GPS, or license plate recognition. These approaches can struggle with lane-level accuracy, require dedicated hardware installed on vehicles, or are vulnerable to misidentification when multiple vehicles are nearby. Emerging applications such as automated payments, vehicle servicing, manufacturing quality control, drive-through commerce, and smart parking, require a more reliable, scalable, and cost-effective way to securely identify the correct vehicle in real time.

The Technology

OSU engineers have developed a novel system that enables secure vehicle-to-infrastructure interactions by matching unique vehicle motion signatures observed from two independent perspectives. A smartphone or onboard device transmits motion-related information associated with a specific vehicle, while infrastructure-mounted sensors independently observe vehicle movement. Intelligent matching algorithms correlate these signatures to accurately identify which vehicle is present in a particular lane or service location. By leveraging existing mobile devices and low-cost infrastructure sensors, the system provides reliable vehicle identification without requiring specialized vehicle-mounted transponders.

Commercial Applications

  • Automated vehicle payments for parking, tolling, charging, fueling, and car wash services
  • Vehicle identification and routing within automotive manufacturing and testing facilities
  • Drive-through commerce, curbside pickup, and contactless customer verification systems
  • Smart parking, traffic management, and vehicle localization applications in connected infrastructure environments

Benefits/Advantages

  • High identification accuracy
  • Minimal vehicle-side hardware requirements
  • Lower infrastructure cost
  • Enhanced security and resistance to misidentification
