a Wireless, pH Regeneratable, Chemical Species Electronic Bio-SensorThe NeedDiagnostic tools are key to medicine, research and diagnostics. The measurement of biomolecules and their absorption kinetics can facilitate a better understanding of drug intake, biological responses, or in the continuous monitoring of specimen. Current equipment requires centralized equipment, trained personal, and chemical reagent treatment for reuse. These factors increase cost, limit reusability, and do not allow continuous at home monitoring.
The TechnologyResearchers led by Dr. Li at The Ohio State University have developed a wireless, pH regeneratable, electronic biosensor. This device is able to repeatedly and continuously monitor for chemical species such as dopamine, serotonin, and cocaine. Through a DNA functionalized and pH regulated micro-environment, the same sensor is able to detect biomolecules, and regenerate itself with minimal impact on surrounding areas. The sensor can regenerate without chemical reagents and can be regenerated for 6 cycles. The biochemical interfaces can be custom designed with this device to wirelessly sense a variety of chemicals and biomolecules.
