The Need
Emergency aerial vehicles often require compact stowage for trailer transport and reliable landing capabilities on unpredictable terrain such as slopes, sand, or flooded areas. Conventional skid-based landing gear lacks the adaptability and stability needed for these conditions. A lightweight, terrain-responsive solution is needed to ensure safe deployment and recovery in diverse environments.
The Technology
This landing gear system, developed by OSU engineers, features four lightweight landing pads designed to maximize surface contact and minimize tip-over risk on uneven terrain. Drawing inspiration from lunar landers and bush planes, the design replaces traditional wheels and skids with a collapsible pad system. Off-plane caster wheels assist in trailer deployment, while a hand-cranked jack lowers the vehicle for ground contact, enhancing operational flexibility.
