GPS Independent Lane Level Vehicle Localization

Technology bundle containing T2025-148 and T2024-150.

The Need

Reliable vehicle localization is critical for autonomous and human-driven vehicles, especially in GPS-denied environments such as dense urban areas, tunnels, and off-road farms and construction sites. Current localization methods relying solely on GPS are prone to signal loss and inaccuracies, leading to safety and operational challenges. There is a pressing need for a robust, GPS-independent localization solution to ensure continuous and accurate vehicle positioning.

The Technology

This innovative technology, developed by OSU researchers, combines GPS-independent positioning using V2X communication with an arc-length-based map matching method to correct drift in dead reckoning estimates. The system switches between GPS and dead reckoning based on signal availability, using pre-recorded GPS points in V2X map data for cross-referencing.
