Label-Free Raman Imaging for Early Detection of Disease Remodeling

The Need

Many progressive diseases, including cardiac, neurological, and other chronic disorders, begin with subtle molecular and cellular changes long before conventional clinical signs become detectable. Current diagnostic approaches generally identify disease only after significant tissue remodeling or functional decline has occurred. While advanced microscopy can reveal these early nanoscale changes, it is not practical for routine clinical use due to its invasive nature. There is a significant unmet need for minimally invasive technologies capable of identifying early disease-associated tissue remodeling in living patients before irreversible pathology develops.

The Technology

OSU researchers have developed a novel platform to detect disease-associated molecular remodeling in tissues without the need for external labels, contrast agents, or complex sample preparation. By identifying unique molecular signatures associated with changes in cellular organization, the platform enables visualization of biological processes that occur at the earliest stages of disease progression. The approach has the potential to be integrated into clinically compatible imaging systems, supporting real-time assessment of tissue health and providing a new pathway for earlier diagnosis and intervention across multiple therapeutic areas.
